Poland considers it necessary to immediately stop the Nord Stream 2 project and intends to call for this step Olaf Scholz, who is likely to head the new German government. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said this in an interview with the German tabloid Bild, which was published on Thursday, November 18.

According to Morawiecki, he is going to tell Scholz the following: “We in Poland are now defending the borders of the EU. If we are talking about a broader perspective, then let’s work together for peace and not provide Vladimir Putin with additional money for which he can continue to arm himself.”

Halt of Nord Stream 2 certification

Earlier, on November 16, the Federal Networks Agency (BNetzA) in Bonn announced that it had suspended the certification procedure for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The process will resume after the operator Nord Stream 2 AG, based in the Swiss city of Zug, transfers the main assets and human resources to a German subsidiary and the regulator can check the newly submitted documents.

The length of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is about 1200 km. It was completed in September, and now it is being used for technical pumping of gas. The project consists of two pipes, their total capacity is 55 billion cubic meters. On November 8, Gazprom announced that the gas pipeline was fully completed and ready for launch. On the same day, the German regulator began the certification process for Nord Stream 2. According to experts, it may drag on until May 2022 due to consideration by the European Commission.

The Kremlin said on November 17 that it understands the suspension of the pipeline certification process. According to the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin Dmitry Peskov, the gas pipeline operator follows all the recommendations of the German side and is ready to create a new legal entity in order to comply with the requirements of the legislation of the Federal Republic of Germany.
