Since the beginning of the year, US President Joseph Biden has sent a package of sanctions against Russia proposed by representatives of the National Security Council (SNB) at the White House for revision three times since the beginning of the year. This was announced on Monday, November 15, by Politico, citing two former administration officials who were aware of the review.

At the same time, the American leader pointed out that the modality of the proposed restrictive measures is not strict enough. At the same time, as one of the interlocutors of the publication noted, the head of state did not ask that the punitive nature of the measures be intensified, or that they themselves were directed against Russian citizens. Rather, the US president wanted to make sure the sanctions regime would be smarter, better thought out, and able to change the Kremlin’s behavior.

“It is unclear if Biden will try to reach Putin on the phone.”

At the same time, the newspaper’s sources refused to tell him whether the administration is preparing new penalties or other steps towards Russia and Belarus due to the situation with migrants and refugees at the external border of the EU. “It is also unclear whether Biden will try to call Putin to resolve the situation,” Politico noted.

In addition, the interlocutors of the publication stated that the disagreement on the issue of actions towards Moscow among the supporters of a tougher course and more moderate members of Biden’s team “should not be exaggerated.”

State Department: Washington prepares sanctions against Lukashenka’s regime

The head of the press service of the US State Department Ned Price said on November 15 that in connection with the “inhuman actions” of the Belarusian authorities, Washington is preparing restrictive measures against the regime of Alexander Lukashenko in “close coordination with the EU, as well as other partners and allies.”

The situation on the eastern external border of the EU sharply deteriorated on November 8, when several thousand migrants approached it from Belarus intending to enter the European Union. On the Polish-Belarusian border, there are thousands of people who spend the night in temporary camps at low temperatures. In recent days, refugee groups have repeatedly tried to break through the barriers and cross the border.

At the end of May, Lukashenko announced that the authorities would no longer detain illegal immigrants trying to get to the EU through Belarus. At the beginning of autumn, the number of flights from the Middle East to Minsk increased significantly. After that, the flow of migrants seeking to the EU from the territory of Belarus increased sharply.

The European Union accuses the Lukashenka regime of deliberately provoking a tense situation and organizing the transfer of thousands of migrants to the borders of the European Union in response to European sanctions. In response to the “hybrid attack” of Minsk, the EU plans to introduce a fifth package of sanctions, which will include measures against airlines transporting migrants from the Middle East to Belarus.

The possibility of introducing restrictive measures against 35 citizens of the Russian Federation

The House of Representatives of the US Congress on September 23 approved the draft defense budget for the next fiscal year (starting in the country on October 1). Within the framework of it, the congressmen also adopted a legislative initiative, according to which the Washington administration should consider the possibility of imposing sanctions against 35 Russians, including Russian ministers, major Russian businessmen, public figures and journalists.
