A seismic shift in Polish football has unfolded with the departure of Marek Papszun from Raków Częstochowa, triggering a cascade of coaching changes across the country. After nearly a decade at the helm, the 51-year-old manager has accepted a position with Legia Warszawa, paving the way for Łukasz Tomczyk to take charge in Częstochowa.
The move, confirmed Monday, sends ripples through the PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa and the lower leagues, signaling a period of critically important transition for several clubs.
Polonia Bytom’s Ascent and Tomczyk’s Reward
tomczyk, 37, arrives at Raków after a remarkably successful tenure with Polonia Bytom. He guided the club to promotion to the Ekstraklasa and finished the autumn round in a strong second place – a position that all but guarantees direct promotion to the football elite. This marks a historic moment for Bytom, which has waited almost 15 years for a return to the top flight.
“This is a reward for the hard work and dedication of everyone involved with Polonia bytom,” a senior club official stated during Monday’s press conference.
Czubak Steps In at Polonia Bytom
The vacancy left by Tomczyk’s departure will be filled by Patryk Czubak, who returns to the Polish coaching ranks. The 32-year-old previously left Widzew Łódź in October of last year and spent the last two months as an assistant to Żeljko Sopic at Croatian club NK Osijek.
Polonia Bytom’s leadership explored several other candidates before settling on Czubak. Sports director Tomasz Stefankiewicz reportedly engaged in discussions with Dawid Szulczek, Łukasz Włodark, Jakub Dziółka, and Przemysław Łagożny, the latter of whom has since accepted a role as an assistant coach with Apollon Limassol in Cyprus. Notably, Szulczek is expected to join Tomczyk’s staff at Raków.
A Familiar Face Returns: Rafał Grzyb’s Potential Role
Rafał Grzyb,a veteran player with a strong track record, also impressed during the search process. The 42-year-old recorded 72 appearances for Polonia Bytom during their previous stint in the top league (2006-2010) and brings a wealth of experience to the table. He recently departed Jagiellonia Białystok in October under challenging circumstances, where he served as an assistant to coach adrian Siemieniec.
Bytom prioritizes Fiscal Responsibility
Despite their promising position, Polonia Bytom will begin preparations for the spring round of the Betclic 1st League on Monday without the benefit of a foreign training camp. The club cited financial constraints as the reason for remaining in Poland, emphasizing a commitment to prudent spending.
“we are in a good position, but we must remain realistic and manage our resources carefully,” a club spokesperson explained.
The team will utilize facilities in Bytom, including a main pitch with an artificial surface,to maintain fitness levels.A series of test matches are scheduled, including encounters with Czech sides Sigma Olomouc and Banik Ostrawa, as well as league rivals Ruch Chorzów and GKS Tychy.
Polonia Bytom will kick off their spring campaign on february 7th with a home match against ŁKS Łódź, aiming to solidify their position and secure promotion to the Ekstraklasa.
