/ Former US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, revealed a sharp assessment of President Joe Biden’s administration’s policy towards Iran, amid the escalation of Houthi attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea.

Pompeo confirmed, during an interview with an ABC radio station, that there is a “weak point” in the American approach towards Iran, pointing to the continuation of the policies taken by the previous administration led by Barack Obama, considering that negotiating with Tehran is a “wrong direction.”

Pompeo explained that the Donald Trump administration had classified the Houthis as a terrorist organization, and that removing this classification from the Houthis shows the current administration’s lack of understanding of the nature of the Iranian challenge, stressing that it is not possible to negotiate with them.

Pompeo said: “The Trump administration has classified the Houthis as terrorists. Biden has lifted this terrorist classification. They simply do not understand that you cannot negotiate with the Iranians. There is no possibility of negotiating with the regime in Iran.”

He added: “As long as the Biden administration does not confront the problem, we will likely see prices continue to rise here in the United States, and the risks to our soldiers serving in the Middle East will rise.”

It should be noted that the US administration removed the classification of the Houthis as a terrorist organization in 2021, and is considering reclassification based on a series of attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, which were carried out by the Houthis in response to the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, which sparked the dissatisfaction of the US government.

Since the start of these attacks, cargo ships have been redirected to alternative routes to avoid the Gulf of Aden, resulting in increased shipping and transportation costs.
