Pope Francis named 21 new cardinals this Saturday (30), in a selection that could influence the eventual choice of the next leader of the Catholic Church. Of the total of 137 cardinals currently, three-quarters were designated by the current pontiff, which increases the chances that the next pope will share Francis’ vision of a more progressive and inclusive Church. Among those nominated there are five South Americans.
