Pope Francis sent basic necessities to support the population affected by the war, especially in the area flooded after the destruction of the New Kakhovka dam in Ukraine.

From the Gemelli Hospital, the Holy Father’s recommendation came to the Department for the Service of Charity to send humanitarian aid to Kherson, the most damaged area after the destruction of the New Kajovka dam, which occurred on June 6.

As reported by the Vatican, the food collection center has been the Church of Santa Sofia, the spiritual home of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic community in Rome. From there, the shipment of food, clothing and utensils is organized, thanks to the work of various volunteers, to support the population flogged by the war in the eastern European country.

From the Gemelli Hospital, where Pope Francis spent nine days convalescing from abdominal surgery, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, a beggar to the Holy Father, received a phone call from the Pontiff to find “brave drivers” to carry the load of soaps, diapers and canned food.

Cardinal Krajewski, in statements to the Vatican media, recounted that “even from the Gemelli, Pope Francis has not stopped showing his closeness, especially to the population that is suffering so much in the area of the Kherson dam”.

The Department for the Service of Charity, also called Apostolic Alms, reported that “it is the umpteenth truck that has left Rome.” Krajewski explained that “there are 106 who have come to Ukraine from the church of Hagia Sophia.”

The Vatican department, “competent to receive, seek and request voluntary donations for the charitable works of the Roman Pontiff,” announced that “next week a new aid truck will leave Naples, Italy, consisting mainly of canned food.” .

This is concrete aid that does not stop, despite the fact that more than a year has passed since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
