Porsche 718 in the Cayman (coupé) and Boxster (convertible) versions will not be marketed from the beginning of July in the common European market, because they cannot meet new security regulations. However, the two extreme and very expensive versions of the model, the super-sporty GT4 RS and the open Boxster RS Spider, will continue to be sold as usual until replacements appear.
The importer to Israel, Orchid Motors, says that the European market guidelines are not valid for the Israeli one and that there are still a limited number of units of the above models for sale.
We will remind you that at the end of 2023 it was clarified that the new Macan with an internal combustion engine version will no longer be marketed from the beginning of July this year due to problems related to cyber security and excessively high costs involved in trying to adapt to new regulations in the field. Therefore it will not be sold alongside the new electric Macan as originally planned.
The same problem also concerns the 718 and in this context it is worth mentioning that in any case, and similarly to the Macan, the 718 on its pair of basic versions is expected to receive an electric shifter. And why will the two extreme versions continue? Because they are produced in such low numbers anyway that the requirements of the European standard do not apply to them.
What we think: The Cayman in its closed version with a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine is probably the most enjoyable vehicle to drive that Porsche has ever produced. The 911 is indeed the queen of the brand and will always remain so, but with a rear engine and higher weight alongside dimensions that swell from model to model, it is simply unable to neutralize the laws of physics and compare to the fantastic weight distribution and especially the optimal location of the heaviest part of the car. And the gasoline Cayman is on its way to disappearing, that’s all that matters to us.
