Port of Los Angeles enters 24/7 operation

by time news

The White House administration announced that it reached an agreement with the management of the Los Angeles Seaport – the largest container port in the country – to move to 24-hour operation, seven days a week.

Such a regime should help resolve the crisis in the delivery of goods, the shortage of which is increasingly felt by both businesses and consumers. The port of Los Angeles, along with neighboring Long Beach, which went into operation around the clock a few weeks ago, handles about 40% of all containers arriving in the United States by sea.

Over the past several months, these ports have experienced serious unloading problems. Before the coronavirus pandemic, it was rare to see more than one ship anchored awaiting a berth, but on one day last month, 73 vessels were stationed in the outer roadstead of Los Angeles port.

In a meeting with business leaders and union leaders, Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted the “historical and global nature” of the current transportation and supply chain crisis, the White House said in a statement. Experts say that the shortage of goods and products could last until the middle of next year, and the situation could even get worse before getting better. If anything, few expect an improvement before the start of the Christmas shopping season.
