COUNTRY. –

This was warned by the president of the Daule Rice Growers Association, Abel Navas, in dialogue with Carlos Vera, in the program “Del Día a la Noche”.

Ecuador is in danger of suffering a short-term rice shortage.

Navas explained that the floods, caused by torrential rains, have caused the loss of 10,000 hectares of crops on the Ecuadorian coast, in recent months alone.

The Daule area is the most affected, he said, with 2,500 or 3,000 hectares, while the rest corresponds to Salitre, Santa Lucía, Samborondón, Palestine and Balzar. The Minister of Agriculture was in the area last weekend and confirmed the extent of the damage.

In total, 500,000 bags of rice were lost, representing around 25 million dollars. A great damage that affects 2,000 or 3,000 small farmers on the Coast.

The leader warned that this situation could soon cause a lack of rice in the market, which is why government intervention is necessary.

On behalf of the rice union, Navas urged the government, through BanEcuador, to grant facilities to debtor farmers, since under current conditions they cannot pay.

The ideal would be to give them a moratorium of 6 or 8 months, along with new loans, that allow them to reactivate their crops./El Universo.
