Along these lines, Bastidas has pointed out that ADHD is currently considered by the Ministry of Education as a “serious behavioral disorder”, for which “a disability equal to or greater than 33 percent must be demonstrated”, as indicated by the training in a statement.

However, he stressed that it is “a neurodevelopmental disorder, of neurobiological and hereditary origin, and this is reflected in the two most important classifications used by medical professionals: the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) of the WHO and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) of the American Psychiatric Association”.

“This misunderstanding or lack of knowledge about ADHD at the Health level causes a series of obstacles in the application for scholarships from the Ministry of Education for a good part of the students with specific educational needs, since ADHD is not included as such and they have demonstrate a disability equal to or greater than 33%”, he criticized, adding that “many students are left out when applying for scholarships for specific needs”.

The deputy has described as “paradoxical” that “the Government of Spain, alleged defender of inclusion in education, acts in a contradictory way by preventing access to scholarships for students with educational support needs”, at the same time that she has claimed that reclassification is established and recognized as a neurological disorder.

Likewise, he has urged the Consell to cover in the Public Health System interventions related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), since “early intervention can improve the disorder.”

The parliamentary initiative highlights that ADHD is the third mental health disorder, after anxiety and depression, with more affectation in the world population (6% in people under 25 years of age).
