Prabowo Apologizes for Slow Aid Delivery to Aceh Tamiang Flood Victims
President Prabowo Subianto expressed his apologies on Friday, December 12, 2024, to communities in Aceh Tamiang affected by recent flash floods and landslides, acknowledging that the government’s response to their needs has been imperfect, particularly regarding the restoration of electricity. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing assistance and accelerating recovery efforts in the region.
Addressing Immediate Needs and Infrastructure Challenges
During a visit to a refugee center in Sukajadi Village, Karang Baru, Aceh Tamiang, the Head of State directly addressed the displaced population. “The government will step in and help everyone,” Prabowo stated. “I apologize if there are still some who haven’t [received aid], we are working hard, maybe we don’t have electricity yet.” This admission of ongoing challenges underscores the complexities of disaster relief in the aftermath of severe weather events.
The President proactively inquired with the Regent of Aceh Tamiang, Armia Fahmi, about the status of power restoration. According to Regent Fahmi, electricity service was being gradually restored across the affected areas. “It’s started, sir,” Fahmi reported, prompting a response of “It’s started, okay,” from Prabowo.
Acknowledging Difficulties and Pledging Continued Support
Prabowo emphasized his dedication to improving the situation, stating he would “always try” to expedite aid delivery and infrastructure repairs. He acknowledged the significant obstacles faced by relief workers on the ground.
“Yes, we are trying, we know that in the field it is very difficult, the situation is difficult, so we will overcome it together,” Prabowo said to the refugees. “I think that’s all, OK? Hopefully you will recover quickly, come back quickly, return to normal quickly.”
This visit follows Prabowo’s previous engagements with flood victims in Aceh, demonstrating a sustained focus on the region’s recovery. He is also scheduled to visit North Sumatra and West Sumatra following his trip to Russia, signaling a broader commitment to addressing disaster relief needs across Indonesia.
