Prabowo Subianto Pledges Continued Support for Sumatra Flood Recovery Efforts

Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto has affirmed his commitment to closely monitoring the ongoing recovery from devastating floods and landslides that impacted Sumatra, with a particular focus on infrastructure restoration and ensuring adequate logistical support for affected communities. The President made the announcement Saturday during a visit to an evacuation center in Langkat, North Sumatra, accompanied by Governor Bobby Nasution.

President Subianto stated, “I will continue to monitor developments from day to day, week to week,” signaling a sustained and proactive approach to the crisis response. He noted a discernible improvement in the aid delivery and support for residents compared to his initial assessment following the disaster.

Cyclone Senyar’s Impact on Langkat

Langkat district was among the hardest-hit areas following the hydrometeorological disaster triggered by Cyclone Senyar in late November. The intense weather event caused the collapse of embankments at 11 locations, resulting in widespread flooding across six villages. Local authorities are currently engaged in repairing the damaged infrastructure.

The scale of the damage necessitated a full government response. President Subianto confirmed that all relevant government entities – including the police, military, and various ministries – have been mobilized to expedite recovery efforts. “Earlier, the governor reported to me that shortages of clean water and embankment repairs will be addressed immediately. We are deploying all our strength,” he said.

Aid Delivery and Community Support

During his visit to Langkat, President Subianto personally delivered essential logistical aid, including vital medicines and toys for children displaced by the disaster. This direct engagement underscores the administration’s dedication to providing immediate relief and bolstering morale among evacuees.

The President emphasized the importance of collective action, stating to those sheltering in the evacuation center, “You are all part of us.” This sentiment reflects a broader commitment to national unity and shared responsibility in overcoming the challenges posed by the disaster.

Related reports indicate President Prabowo has also vowed to address the root causes of the flooding, specifically targeting illegal logging practices linked to the increased vulnerability of the region. Furthermore, he has assured residents of Langkat that access to safe water and continued infrastructure repair will remain a top priority.

The successful completion of the recovery process, officials say, hinges on continued collaboration and a coordinated effort between all stakeholders.
