The Grimme Prize was awarded for the 60th time on Friday. The evening was hosted by Siham El-Maimouni – who provided a special interlude in the middle of the moderation.

The award ceremony for the coveted Grimme Awards for particularly successful television programs took place on Friday evening in Marl, North Rhine-Westphalia. The new interim head of the Grimme Institute, Peter Wenzel, whose appointment had only been announced the day before, also came to the gala in the city theater. The event was moderated by WDR star Siham El-Maimouni.

The 39-year-old led the way through the evening in a black sleeveless pants suit with a white collar. She also combined pointed pumps with a high stiletto heel. Not the most convenient choice, as it turned out. To the amazement of the audience, Siham El-Maimouni took off her shoes in the middle of the presentation.

“I won’t wear them again,” she clarified – and continued without further ado in stockings. She also accepted her own prize. The previously awarded presenter Sarah Bosetti took the microphone for the laudatory speech.

Siham El-Maimouni received the Grimme Prize for a special edition of “Sendung mit der Maus” in Morocco, her parents’ homeland. She herself was born in Duisburg. Sarah Bosetti’s show “Bosetti Late Night” was honored by the jury for the dynamic with which the presenter broke down classic late night formats.

In addition to Bosetti’s show, the pilot episode of the talk show “The Last Drink with Anna Dushime” received a Grimme Prize. The journalist interviewed Roberto Blanco at the cocktail bar – and elicited a sexual confession from him that caused a stir. You can read more about this here.

For the first time, more women than men received awards

A total of 17 productions received the unduly but highly prestigious award over the course of the evening. With the exception of Disney+, only public broadcasters, the private broadcasters came away empty-handed this year. For the first time in the prize’s 60-year history, there were more women than men among the prizewinners.

The award-winning programs included “Ukraine – War Diary of a Pediatrician” (Arte). The film follows the work of doctor Vira Primakova in the intensive care unit of a children’s hospital in Lviv. The jury praised the film “Nothing that happens to us” (WDR), which also received a Grimme Prize, as an “extremely valuable contribution to the Me Too debate”. It’s about the accusation of rape after a party.

The Grimme Prize-winning production by the streaming provider Disney+ “Sam – Ein Sachse” about an Afro-German police officer in Saxony focused on combating racism. The series is based on a real case. Lead actor Malick Bauer thanked the real former Saxon police officer Samuel Meffire from the stage for the “intensive exchange” for the series.

The ARD correspondent in Istanbul, Katharina Willinger, was honored for her special journalistic achievement. The jury praised her for persistently reporting on the suffering after the earthquake in Turkey, even when most of the cameras had already moved on. Willinger is also responsible for Iran.
