The Maquilishuat tree began to bloom from the first weeks of the year, and its beauty has not gone unnoticed by Salvadorans. Even the President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele, questioned why the capital is not yet adorned with more Maquilishuat trees.

“I have never understood why the city is not full of these trees. It is our national tree, a native species; It is also beautiful and fits perfectly into the ecosystem,” the president said on his X account.

In that sense, President Bukele asked the Minister of Public Works, Romeo Rodríguez, to “fill the city with these trees,” to which the official responded: “at the order of President Nayib Bukele, we will fill the entire country with Maquilishuat.”

The Maquilishuat is the national tree of El Salvador; According to the Ministry of Culture, these trees bloom with pink leaves from January to May, while their fruits appear between February and May. Its name comes from the Nahuat makwiliswat, in which makwil means five and ishuat means leaf.

It was named national tree thanks to the executive decree issued by the Ministry of Agriculture on June 26, 1939 and published in the Official Gazette on July 5 of that year, which designates it along with the balm and marks June 22 as National Day. Tree.
