“On behalf of the United Nations we would like to congratulate you on your brilliant presidency of the Regional Monitoring Mechanism of the Framework Agreement for Peace, Security and Cooperation for the DRC and the region. The United Nations recognizes the role that Burundi plays in the region, particularly in stabilizing the East of the DRC,” indicated the special envoys who also expressed their sympathy, solidarity and condolences to the President of the Republic and the Burundian people following the attacks of terrorists who took the lives of citizens on the night of December 23, 2023 in Gatumba in Mutimbuzi Commune, Bujumbura Province.

These special envoys also expressed their concern about relations between Burundi and Rwanda and the security situation in the DRC, expressing the wish for the United Nations to provide support to better support and ensure peace and security in the countries of the Great Lakes Region.

“It is the government’s obligation to protect citizens; so we must prevent to protect,” suggested the Burundian Number One who explained the reasons behind Burundi’s decision to close the land borders with Rwanda.

He continued by indicating that Burundi has, for its part, taken all possible initiatives to maintain good relations with Rwanda but in vain, and asked the international community to intervene before reaffirming that “Burundi will not be never part of the conflict but of the solution.”

While welcoming the efforts of the Burundian Head of State to ensure national cohesion and the development of the country and its people, the United Nations special envoys strongly requested his support in respecting the implementation of the Framework agreement: “Given what you have been and what you are, we are counting on you as the United Nations,” they stressed.
