President Gustavo Petro announced today the decision to decree April 19 as a civic day in Colombiawith the main objective of promoting the saving of electricity and water in the midst of the climate crisis that the country is going through.
During the commemoration of the 73rd Anniversary of the General Command of the Military Forces, President Petro highlighted the urgency of taking concrete measures to confront the environmental situation, particularly in the city of Bogotá. In this sense, he expressed the importance of population reduce the consumption of electricity and drinking water to the maximumwith a view to preserving these resources for the coming weeks.
«A civic day so that people do not use electricity as much as possible, we can save energy that we need in the coming days and, above all, so that people reduce, as much as possible, the consumption of drinking water in these great cities,” the president emphasized.

In addition, Petro called on citizens to voluntarily look for entertainment alternatives outside of Bogotá during the weekend, in order to reduce pressure on drinking water reservoirs.
“Let’s try to get through the emergency together without rationing,” the President stressed.
In the midst of this initiative, some critical reactions were immediate. Senator María Fernanda Cabal said: «Petro is not only inept but opportunistic. He talks about a civic day tomorrow, April 19, his birthday and M-19 day. Gustavo, don’t look for excuses like water or energy. Could it be that he is afraid of the great national march against him and wants a festive long weekend from now on?
