President Gustavo Petro has given instructions to all entities and organizations of the Executive Branch to implement urgent measures to save electricity and water, in the face of the El Niño phenomenon that affects the country.

Through the presidential directive No. 1 of April 1, 2024the Presidency has established four measures that must be applied immediately by all government entities to optimize and promote the reduction of consumption of public services in their facilities.

Each entity must establish quantifiable and verifiable goals for electricity and water consumption, as well as carry out a weekly evaluation to guarantee compliance with said goals.

Besides, It is ordered to design, implement and adjust work-from-home schemes for all plant personnel and contractors. Institutional communications must include messages that promote energy and water savings in all dissemination channels of the entities.

Regarding supplies within the offices, priority will be given to the use of low consumption systems in light bulbs, luminaires, motion sensors, air conditioning and electrical outlets, among other elements that allow energy savings.

In addition, The effective use of electrical devices is recommended to minimize their consumption. This includes computers, televisions and other office equipment.

The presidential directive highlights the importance of these measures for the prioritization and planning of operating budgets, as well as for the contracting and purchasing plans of state entities.

The monitoring and fulfillment of these goals will be the responsibility of the directives of each state entity, in order to guarantee effective implementation of energy and water saving measures in the public sector.
