The President of the Republic of Armenia, the Chairman of the Chess Federation of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, today, at the invitation of the “Development Initiatives of Armenia” Foundation and the “Acronis” company, received the number 1 chess player of the ranking of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Armenia, grandmaster, reigning world champion, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen and world cup winner. , three-time winner of the World Chess Olympiad, Grandmaster Levon Aronian, champion of the world team championship as part of the Armenian national team. The President of the Republic, together with the world chess champion, hosted the leaders of a number of companies that have achieved success in the field of information technologies, such as “Parallels”, “Acronis” companies and “Skolkovo” foundation, who visited our country within the framework of the “Development Initiatives of Armenia” program. The Foundation has combined chess and information technologies under the same program, taking into account that great importance is attached to those areas, which have already recorded considerable success in Armenia.
The executive director of the fund, who was present at the meeting, noted that the goal of the program is to present Armenia with its successes and features to the world and create new opportunities for development in our country in a number of promising fields.
The President welcomed the guests and the foundation’s mission, emphasizing that it is a great honor to host the world’s most powerful chess player Magnus Carlsen in Armenia, taking into account the attitude towards chess in Armenia.
“I am glad that Levon Aronian is also here. He is the pride of our people and, I think, the strongest opponent of Magnus in chess. We certainly have high hopes for Levon, and it is primarily thanks to him that the team selected from our small country has become the three-time champion of the Chess Olympiads three times. I thank him very much. Of course, I am also happy that people who have achieved great success in the field of information technologies are gathered here. I think, with this initiative, the Foundation “Development Initiatives of Armenia” once again turned its attention to the right point, which is welcome,” President Serzh Sargsyan said.
Magnus Carlsen also considered it a great honor to be in a great chess country, wonderful Armenia.
“During these few days that I have been here in Armenia, I have seen the love and enthusiasm that the Armenian people have for chess. I think that Armenia, with such an approach and, especially, by making chess a part of the school curriculum, serves a wonderful example to the whole world. It is a very big step,” said the world chess champion.
During the meeting with President Serzh Sargsyan, the scientific and educational potential of Armenia, the works carried out in our country in the direction of the development of the chess and IT sector, and prospective development programs were discussed.
