International Human Rights Watch has appealed to President Wickremesinghe to end the repression.

International Human Rights Watch has appealed to Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe to ensure that his administration takes steps to protect the human rights of all Sri Lankans.

In a letter published today, Human Rights Watch has set out its key human rights concerns.

Ranilwickramasinghe was sworn in as the President on July 21 after the then President stepped down following several months of protests against the mismanagement of the economy and corruption.

Sri Lanka is caught in the middle of a political economic human rights crisis after years of mismanagement and human rights abuses.

By implementing appropriate social security procedures

The government should give priority to protecting the public from crises by addressing corruption in the country.

At the same time, fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and assembly, must be respected and abuses by the armed forces must be ended.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has faced many challenges, but the implementation of the draconian Anti-Terrorism Act, political arrests of protest leaders and monitoring of activist groups will not help find a solution to the worst problems Sri Lanka is facing, said Human Rights Watch’s South Asia Director Meenaksi Ganguly.

He also said that Sri Lanka’s colleagues have a clear position that if the Sri Lankan government follows human rights, follows the rule of law, and finds a solution to the fundamentals of the crisis, international assistance will be useful.
