The first African soloist to sing at a coronation of kings and queens of England, that of Charles III last May, Pretty Yende, 38, touched the world through her voice. Born in South Africa still under apartheid, the soprano discovered opera at 16, trained at La Scala in Milan and today performs on the biggest stages in the world. Carmen Lunsmann met the star with the luminous tone in The Tales of Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach, currently on display at the Paris Opera, where she plays a sparkling and fiery “Olympia” doll.
