Preventive prison of more than three years for a lawyer linked to a corruption plot in Peru

The Fifth National Criminal Appeals Chamber of Peru has issued 36 months of preventive detention against the lawyer José Luis Castillo Alva, linked to the so-called ‘Los Cuellos Blancos del Puerto’ plot, to which the leader of Fuerza Popular (FP), Keiko Fujimori, who would have judicially and administratively protected the Hayduk fishing company and its manager, Mildo Martínez, in exchange for financing for his campaigns. Castillo is being investigated for the alleged crime of criminal organization to the detriment of the State and has been sought and captured to be placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority for his confinement in the respective penitentiary establishment, as reported by the Andina Agency. In this way, the court has declared founded the appeal of the Public Ministry against the first instance resolution that had imposed on Castillo Alva appearance with restrictions, subject to compliance with rules of conduct. The lawyer, also known as ‘Pepe Lucho’, is being investigated for having maintained links and actions with the organization called ‘Los Cuellos Blancos del Puerto’. This criminal group was made up of officials of the Judicial Branch, as well as former members of the deactivated National Council of the Judiciary (CNM), who performed judicial favors and reduced sentences benefiting dozens of businessmen.
