Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Vienna Price negotiations between manufacturers and suppliers are traditionally difficult in the automotive industry. The manufacturers want to spend as little as possible, the suppliers want to get the maximum out of the price financially. This year, however, the talks have been particularly tough, as the Handelsblatt learned from high-ranking representatives from both sides.

The reason: the difficult order situation and the fear of falling profit margins in the second half of the year are increasing the pressure on car manufacturers to save. After Volkswagen, the premium manufacturers Mercedes and BMW are now also looking more intensively for potential savings. The pressure is greatest in procurement – ​​and the automotive suppliers are feeling the effects.

“It’s really uncomfortable at the moment,” said the manager of a supplier to the Handelsblatt. At Continental, for example, the targets for this fiscal year are even shaky. The Dax group from Hanover had to publish an unexpected loss in its car division in a mandatory notification in the second quarter – partly because the price negotiations with the car manufacturers dragged on.
