Pride month: 10% of French people say they are LGBT +, according to a survey

One in ten French people identify as LGBT+, according to a survey by Ipsoson the occasion of “pride month”. In detail, 4% of French people questioned say they are lesbian or homosexual, 3% bisexual, 1% pansexual (which refers to being sexually attracted to anyone, regardless of sex or gender) and 1% asexual ( who feels no sexual attraction to anyone).

These figures, however, miss strong disparities between the generations: if the share of LGBT + reached 19% among people born between the mid-1990s and the beginning of the 2010s, it is only 4% for the baby-boom generation. “On the other hand, there is little difference between women and men or even between social and geographical categories”, notes Ipsos.

These results are “very close to the average of the 30 countries” where this study was carried out, also indicates the polling institute. Among the countries tested, Brazil has the highest share of LGBT+ people, at 15%. Next come Spain (14%), Switzerland (13%) and the Netherlands (12%). With 4%, Peru is the country with the lowest percentage of LGBT + among its population.

Support for same-sex parenting

The Ipsos institute also notes that “all segments of the LGBT + community have become more visible over the past two years”, but that this visibility varies greatly from one country to another.

Another theme tested by the study, the opening of marriage to homosexuals is supported by a majority of people. In France, where the law authorizing marriage for same-sex couples just celebrated its tenth anniversarytwo-thirds of those questioned say they are in favor of it but 10% are still opposed to it.

Support for same-sex parenting is also important in France, where nearly three-quarters of respondents believe that same-sex couples have as much chance as other parents of raising their children successfully. “If this opinion is stronger among supporters of left-wing parties, it is also in the majority among those of the Republicans or the RN”, also indicates Ipsos.
