the Allegations and Initial fallout
In August 2021, virginia Giuffre filed a lawsuit against Prince Andrew, alleging he sexually assaulted her on three separate occasions, including twice when she was 17 years old. Giuffre detailed these alleged assaults in her recent memoir, “Nobody’s Girl,” claiming she was trafficked by Epstein and forced into sexual encounters with the prince.
According to Giuffre’s account, the first encounter occurred in March 2001 at Maxwell’s London home. She recalls Andrew inquiring about her age, and upon learning she was 17, stating his daughters were “just a little younger than you.” Subsequent encounters allegedly took place at Epstein’s New York townhouse and on Epstein’s private island, described as an “orgy” involving Andrew, Epstein, and approximately eight other young women who “all appeared to be under the age of 18 and didn’t really speak English.”
Settlement and Public Condemnation
Facing mounting pressure, a joint letter filed with a US court in February 2022 revealed that Prince Andrew and Giuffre had reached an out-of-court settlement. While the terms remain undisclosed, reports suggest the settlement exceeded £9 million (US$12 million). Crucially, Prince Andrew made no admission of liability in the agreement.
Prior to the settlement,Andrew’s public image had already suffered significant damage. he stepped down as a UK trade envoy in 2011 due to controversy surrounding his ties to Epstein. A disastrous 2019 television interview, in which he denied having sex with Giuffre and claimed he had “no recollection at all” of ever meeting her, led to his withdrawal from public duties and relinquishment of his “HRH” (His Royal Highness) title.
Royal Repudiation and Final Removal
The situation continued to deteriorate. In January 2022, Queen Elizabeth II stripped Prince Andrew of his military titles and royal patronages after he failed to quash the civil suit filed by Giuffre. On October 17th, andrew agreed to relinquish his Duke of York title under pressure from his brother, Charles. His former wife, Sarah Ferguson, who had previously borrowed money from Epstein, will also no longer be known as the Duchess of York.
The final blow came on Thursday,as King Charles III,responding to growing public outcry,moved to strip his younger brother of all remaining titles and evict him from the Royal Lodge,where he had resided for two decades on a nominal rent agreement.
