Prince Harry, speaking in a new interview released Tuesday, expressed a desire to reconcile with his family following his return to the UK. While the Duke of Sussex said he wants to work it out,
he noted that some people don’t want it to work out,
a comment his spokesperson later clarified was not directed at his relatives.
Prince Harry’s Interview with GQ
In a discussion with GQ’s weekly series, One More Question, the 42-year-old Duke addressed the ongoing strain within the British royal family. The interview, recorded in late September, comes as Prince Harry has settled back into life in the UK with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children. He described the family rift as a massively relatable issue
that mirrors sibling disagreements
and broken relationships between kids and parents
experienced by many others. He noted that such experiences come up frequently in his conversations with other people, emphasizing that he knows how common these challenges are.
When asked about the possibility of repairing the damage to his relationships, the Prince suggested that while scars stick around forever,
he remains focused on the future. For me, there’s enough drama in the world and enough drama in people’s lives to continue with issues with family,
he stated, adding that he would encourage others to let go of the past for the greater good.
He further noted that once people have been able to talk about these issues and raise awareness, the environment becomes slightly easier to manage.
Clarification on Reconciliation Comments
The Duke’s remarks regarding those who don’t want it to work out
prompted immediate speculation about his relationship with his older brother, Prince William. The siblings, who were once close, have had a strained relationship since the Sussexes left the UK in 2020. They were last in the same room together at the funeral of their uncle, Lord Fellowes, in 2024, though they did not sit near one another and are not believed to have spoken. Prior to that, they were seen together during the funeral events for Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
It was absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other member of his family. The comment was made in a general context and was not directed at his family in any way.

Their relationship has been further complicated by allegations made in a Netflix documentary and the Duke’s autobiography, Spare, in which he wrote about his brother and sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, including sharing Kate‘s alleged texts with Meghan Markle.
Life in the UK and Future Outlook
The move back to Britain, which occurred in the late summer, was described by Prince Harry as a decision driven by the need for new opportunities for his family. He admitted the move was a quicker decision than they had originally planned, stating, This wasn’t something that we planned for a long time.

Beyond his family life, the Duke expressed hope for a shift in his fraught relationship with the British press. Having fought several necessary battles
through legal channels, he indicated a desire to move forward. My hope is that it will change,
he said. There have been some battles that have been fought, necessarily so. But hopefully we can all draw a line under that.
As the Sussexes are not working royals, they do not participate in official royal engagements. The couple recently appeared in Nottingham for three quasi-royal style engagements, their first public outing since returning to the country.
