Prince William made television history by becoming the first royal to sit on the famous sofa during a surprise appearance on The Graham Norton Show, joining celebrity guests to discuss the Earthshot Prize ahead of next month’s awards ceremony in Mumbai.
Television audiences watched in astonishment as the future king emerged during a pre-recorded special dedicated to the Earthshot Prize, stepping out to join host Graham Norton alongside actors Cate Blanchett and Hannah Waddingham, and Robert Irwin. The surprise unrolling followed television appearances by Princess Anne on The Wogan Show in 1985 and the late Prince Philip in 1986.

The appearance gave viewers a glimpse into royal family habits alongside serious environmental advocacy. Sitting on the studio sofa in a blue suit, the Prince of Wales revealed his household’s viewing preferences, admitting that Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are obsessed with Celebrity Traitors.
Yet the primary focus remained firmly on the global environmental initiative William established in 2020, drawing inspiration from US President John F Kennedy’s Moonshot project. Tracing the origins of the project, he explained how a constant stream of environmental negativity pushed him to seek an alternative approach that paired urgent action with optimism. For many years I was hearing stories about environment issues and one thing that struck me was the negativity and doom which got me down,
he told the audience, noting that he wanted to build something that would celebrate and scale solutions for the planet.
Environmental Initiative Rewards Ideas to Save the Planet
The shared sofa appearance brought together key figures from across the environmental initiative’s network.

Founded to reward ideas to help save the planet, the initiative is halfway through its decades-long cycle and has previously been staged in London, Singapore, Cape Town, Boston, and Rio de Janeiro. Past ceremonies have drawn famous faces including former Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel and then-UK prime minister Keir Starmer, alongside performances from pop stars Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes. The future king has committed himself to the prize until 2030.

Each category winner receives £1m to scale their work. Among the 2025 victors was Lagos Fashion Week, which earned accolades for altering one of the planet’s most resource-heavy sectors by mandating that creators prove their dedication to green practices. At last year’s ceremony, William noted that the winners were proof that progress is possible.
