Prison riot in Ecuador; 68 prisoners were killed

Quito: Another prison riot in Ecuador. At least 68 people have been killed in clashes between inmates at the jail. 25 people were injured. The clashes erupted Friday evening at the Littoral Prison in the city of Guayaquil in the South American country of Ecuador. Similar incidents had been reported from this jail before.

The clashes involved criminals linked to the Mexican criminal gangs Sinaloa and the Jalisco New Generation Cartels.

At the end of last September, 116 prisoners were killed in clashes at the same prison. The leader of a gang was released from jail yesterday.

Police say other groups took advantage of his absence to infiltrate their territory and seize power.

Guns, ammunition and swords were recovered from the jail. The clash was brought under control by more police.
Troops have been deployed in the jail.

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso has called for new measures to crack down on mafia groups after the incident. He called on the United States and the European Union to work together to strengthen the country’s armed forces.

At the same time, prisons in Ecuador are reportedly overcrowded. This is said to be the reason for the recurrence of attacks.
