Illinois Department of Agriculture Welcomes New Director
Kirsten Jones has been appointed as the new Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Currently serving as Deputy Director, Jones brings a wealth of experience within the department, having previously held positions as Communications Director, Division Manager of Food Safety and animal Protection, Division Manager of Natural Resources, and Assistant State Fair Manager.
Throughout her tenure, Jones has consistently championed Illinois agriculture. “She has been a fierce advocate for agriculture,” a senior official stated, “working with stakeholders and the General Assembly to invest in crucial areas like a statewide field veterinarian network and support for underserved farmers.” Her efforts also include promoting Illinois agricultural products in both domestic and international markets. Prior to her work with the Department of Agriculture, jones spent four years as a Management Consultant for Kerber, Eck, and Braeckel, focusing on the implementation of the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. She began her career in state government as a James H. Dunn Fellow, serving as a legislative aide. Jones holds a Bachelor of Science in agricultural Communications and Advertising from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Illinois Springfield.
Havana Regional Port District Welcomes Continued Leadership
Robert Martin will continue his service as a Member of the Havana Regional Port District. Martin, who retired in 2024 after a 51-year career as Owner and publisher of the Fulton Democrat and the Mason County Democrat newspapers, has served as Chairman of the district since 2018.
During his leadership, the Havana Airport has seen important advancement, including the construction of new hangars, pavement improvements, and the installation of airfield lighting. Beyond his role with the port district, Martin is deeply involved in his community, with past leadership positions in the Havana Rotary Club, Havana Chamber of Commerce, and the havana Experimental Aircraft Association. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts Studies from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Dr. Donn Mendoza Joins Illinois Board of Higher Education
Dr. Donn Mendoza has been appointed as a Member of the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Currently the superintendent of Round Lake area School District 116, overseeing the education of over 6,000 students, Mendoza has a proven track record in educational leadership.
His career includes previous roles as Deputy Superintendent and High School Principal in Round Lake, as well as superintendent and principal positions in Crystal Lake, Barrington, and Carpentersville. According to a release, Mendoza’s career “reflects a deep commitment to strategic planning, instructional enhancement, collaborative labor relations, and community engagement.” He holds a Bachelor of arts in Elementary Education from Judson College, a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Aurora University, and a Doctor of Education from Northern Illinois University.
Dr. Brianne Hobbs Appointed to State Board of Health
Dr.Brianne Hobbs will serve as a Member of the State Board of Health. Currently Dean and professor at Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Optometry, Hobbs brings extensive experience in healthcare leadership and education.
Her previous roles include a clinical leadership position within the Salisbury Veterans Affairs Healthcare System and Director of Exam innovation for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.She also served as Associate Dean of Academics at High Point University’s School of Optometry, contributing to the development of a new optometry program. Hobbs is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the American Optometric Association. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Harding University, her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Missouri St. Louis’ College of Optometry, and her Doctor of Philosophy in Instructional Management and Leadership from Robert Morris University.
These appointments underscore the Governor’s commitment to assembling a team of dedicated and experienced professionals to serve the state of illinois. All appointments are pending confirmation by the Illinois Senate.
