Priyanka Chopra Jonas Addresses Backlash & Reveals the Secret to Her Marriage with Nick Jonas
Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas have captivated the public since their whirlwind romance began in 2018, but their relationship hasn’t been without scrutiny. The actress recently opened up about the initial public reaction to their pairing, the persistent rumors surrounding their marriage, and the surprising sincerity that solidified their bond.
Chopra Jonas, currently balancing filming commitments – including her first Indian movie in years, Varanasi, and a forthcoming action film slated for release in 2026 – addressed the challenges faced early in her relationship with Jonas in a recent interview with Variety. She revealed the hurtful nature of the criticism they received.
“I don’t know what was it about us that rubbed people the wrong way,” Chopra Jonas stated. “I think there was the intercultural nature of it — different countries, different religions, age gap. It was very hurtful. And we both, instead of looking out, just sort of looked at each other, and we were like, ‘It doesn’t matter.’ So it’s like water off a duck’s back now.”
The couple, now parents to a young daughter, has frequently been the subject of speculation, with some questioning the authenticity of their relationship. Chopra Jonas dismissed these rumors, asserting that she has “stopped thinking about it” and allowing others to “keep waiting for it to implode” if they choose.
The age gap between the pair – Chopra Jonas is ten years older than Jonas, having been 35 to his 25 when they first met – has also been a recurring topic of discussion. Previously, Chopra Jonas admitted to initially dismissing Jonas, describing him as “a 70-year-old man stuck in a 30-year-old’s body” before recognizing his genuine character.
Their quick courtship and marriage – within six months of meeting – also raised eyebrows. “When I first married him, I didn’t know if it was even real,” Chopra Jonas confessed. “This part of him. Because I was like, ‘This is crazy. This is put on.’ But Nick has this absolute sincerity. It inspires me every day in a profession which requires you to pivot and become whatever you need to put on. He’s constantly sincere.”
She attributes his unwavering authenticity to his upbringing, praising his parents as “the most wonderful, levelheaded, absolute saints.” This sincerity, she notes, is a “disarming quality” that has profoundly impacted her own life.
The couple’s affection is playfully symbolized by matching tattoos – a checkmark in a box, inspired by Jonas’s proposal, which reportedly included him telling Chopra Jonas she “checked all of his boxes.” Priyanka has the tattoo behind her ear, while Nick’s is on his arm.
“He doesn’t feel the need to deviate from that sincerity for anything or anyone,” Chopra Jonas explained. “He is himself and comfortable in it, and I really learned how to be a lot more comfortable in my awkwardness and my insecurities since I got married to him. It really continues to be inspiring to me, this sincerity. We don’t see it often enough anymore, that deep truth when you just start talking to someone. You’re like, ‘Oh, this person is completely transparent.’”
