Priyanka Gandhi Accuses Modi Government of Diversion Tactics Amidst West Bengal Election Cycle
A heated debate in the Lok Sabha surrounding the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram” saw Congress General Secretary and Member of Parliament Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sharply criticize the ruling Modi government, alleging a deliberate attempt to deflect public attention from pressing contemporary issues onto historical discussions, particularly as the West Bengal assembly elections approach.
Gandhi, speaking in the House, framed the debate over the national song as emotionally resonant, stating, “Our Parliament is debating the National Anthem and it is based on an emotion. When we chant Vande Mataram, that emotion is evoked. It reminds us of the freedom struggle. It reminds us of its courage, strength and morality. The British Empire bowed before it.”
‘Vande Mataram’ and the Question of Timing
The Congress MP questioned the timing of the discussion, emphasizing the song’s deep-rooted connection to the nation’s identity. “This song has been part of the soul of the country for 150 years. It lives in the hearts of its people. It has been in the country for 75 years. Why is it being discussed today? What is its purpose? How do we fulfill the trust and responsibility we have with the public?” she asked, directly linking the renewed focus on “Vande Mataram” to the upcoming electoral contest in West Bengal.
Gandhi asserted that the government’s focus on the past represents a failure to address present-day challenges. “Your aim is to wallow in the past and the past. This government does not want to look into the present or the future,” she stated. She further claimed a shift in the Prime Minister’s leadership, arguing, “Today Modi is not like he was once the Prime Minister. His policies are weakening the country.”
Economic Concerns and a Lack of Solutions
The Congress leader detailed a litany of economic woes plaguing the nation, including inflation, unemployment, and farmer distress. She noted that even those in power acknowledge these problems, yet remain silent in the face of widespread hardship. “The country is beset by inflation, unemployment, farmer distress and many other problems. Those in power also admit this, so they remain silent. For them, the people of the country are besieged by many problems. There is no solution,” Gandhi declared.
She also preemptively criticized future parliamentary discussions, warning, “Tomorrow comes the time to discuss electoral reforms and we will still talk.”
A Pledge of Continued Opposition
Gandhi concluded her remarks with a firm commitment to continued opposition, regardless of electoral outcomes. “You (BJP) are here for elections, we are here for the country. No matter how many elections we lose, we will sit here and fight against you and your ideology. We will continue to fight for our country. You cannot stop us…” she asserted, directly taunting the BJP and signaling a sustained challenge to the ruling party’s policies and governance.
