British digital and music entrepreneur Jamal EdwardsWho was a pioneer in rap and gram music (the genre considered the British equivalent of hip-hop) in England, died at the age of 31.

Edwards founded the YouTube channel and the SBTV media platform, which helped launch successful British artists including Ed Sheeran, Dave and Jesse J to a global audience. After reaching success with his channel, which he opened at the age of 15, Edwards was considered to have extensive charity work and acted to break a taboo on men’s mental health. The cause of death has not yet been announced.

Edwards’ latest post on Instagram was a birthday tribute to “his brother,” Ed Sheeran. He shared an old joint photo from Spain, writing: “Happy birthday, Ed. Blessed to have you in my life, bro. You know someone has been friends for a long time when you lose count of the years! Keep up the inspiration.”

Singer Rita Ora shared a photo of herself and Edwards on Instagram with the caption: “My first interview ever was with you. Jamal, our endless conversations about music and the faith you had in me, and so many of us even before we believed in ourselves.”

“Rest in peace, Jamal Edwards. I thank God you did what he sent you to do. So many of us owe you our careers, man,” wrote British rapper George de Poet. “Thanks for everything.”

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall praised his work as “Ambassador of the Prince’s Trust,” writing: “Edwards was an amazing innovator and entrepreneur, who inspired so many young people, through his work and beyond.”
