Amidst escalating political battles and unprecedented challenges to established norms,the future of U.S. democracy is facing a critical test.
The United States finds itself navigating a period of profound uncertainty, marked by high-stakes standoffs and increasingly unconventional actions by President Trump, Governor Gavin Newsom, and other leaders. From questioning constitutional guarantees to flirting with a third term,the established pathways to political power are being radically altered,leaving many Americans,and even seasoned historians,deeply concerned about the health of the nation’s democratic institutions.
Erosion of Norms and Constitutional Boundaries
“It’s completely unprecedented, completely anomalous-representative, I think, of a major transformation of our normal political life,” stated a Stanford university emeritus professor of history and political science. “You can’t compare it to any other episode, any other period, any other set of events in American history. It is unique and radically novel in distressing ways.” The concern stems from a perceived disregard for constitutional structures,with some arguing that a constitutional crisis began the moment Trump was reelected.
The White House defends the President’s approach,asserting that his “unorthodox approach is why he has been so accomplished and why he has received massive support from the American public.” A spokesperson for the management claimed Trump has “achieved more then any President has in modern history,” citing accomplishments in border security, criminal justice, and international trade.
Gerrymandering and the Fight for Control
The redrawing of congressional districts is a routine process that occurs after each federal census. Though, following Trump’s encouragement, Texas redrew its congressional lines this year to favor Republicans. In response, California Democrats proposed Proposition 50, which would allow them to redraw district lines in their favor. Millions of Californians have already cast their ballots on this measure, which has become a focal point in the debate over the future of American democracy. “Let’s fight back and democracy can be defended,” reads one message supporting the proposition,while opponents argue it “rips away the power to draw congressional seats from the people.”
A Deepening Divide and the Specter of 1860
According to a U.S.history professor at the University of Texas at Austin, “Americans who are worried about democracy are right to be concerned,” because Trump “has broken or threatened many of the guardrails of democracy.” The professor further noted that the current political division is unlike anything seen since 1860, the year the Confederacy seceded from the Union, as the disagreement now extends to the very fundamentals of democratic governance.
This division is exacerbated by a climate of rampant disinformation and a President who frequently challenges reality. Trump recently claimed he is experiencing his best polling numbers ever-a demonstrably false statement-and reiterated his desire for a third term, despite constitutional limitations.
The Shutdown and the Battle for Power
Adding to the uncertainty is the ongoing federal government shutdown. Democrats are resisting funding the government in an attempt to force Republicans to reconsider proposed cuts to healthcare subsidies and SNAP benefits. The shutdown has already resulted in furloughs for federal employees and threatens billions in federal funding, potentially cutting off food assistance to over 40 million Americans. A White House spokesperson placed the blame squarely on Democrats, accusing them of using “working Americans and SNAP benefits as ‘leverage’ to pursue their radical left wing agenda.”
A Call for Strengthening Democratic Norms
According to a history professor at Rutgers University, Trump’s actions, coupled with his brash demeanor, have created a uniquely unsettled moment in American political life. While some suggest Democrats should respond in kind, the professor argues that the appropriate response is to strengthen the political norms and boundaries Trump is ignoring. “The more the public, citizens in general, feel that it’s OK to disregard long-standing ways of doing things that have stood the test of time until now, the more likely we are to enter into a more chaotic world-a world in which there will be less justice, less democracy,” the professor warned. “It will be more subject to the whims or preferences of whoever is in power-and in a liberal democracy, that is what you are striving to fight against.”
