OBS: The act of making people cry

Chennai: AIADMK coordinator O. Panneerselvam has said that raising the property tax in Tamil Nadu is an act that will make the people float in tears.

Speaking at an AIADMK rally in Chennai condemning the property tax hike, he criticized the anti-people rule in Tamil Nadu.

AIADMK protests took place in various parts of Tamil Nadu across the state yesterday condemning the property tax hike.

Panneer Selvam led the protest in Chennai and AIADMK co-ordinator Edappadi Palanisamy led the protest in Trichy.

Panneerselvam said the property tax in Tamil Nadu has been raised from 25% to 150% and this will severely affect the poor, the simple and the middle class.

He said that even those living in rented houses would not be affected by this, adding that the DMK had come to power by making false promises.

“During Jayalalithaa’s ten-year rule, there was a tax-free budget, a tax-free regime that did not grab the people.

“None of the more than 500 promises made by the DMK during the election have been fulfilled so far,” Panneerselvam said.

Many people took part in AIADMK demonstrations in Ramanathapuram, Vellore, Tiruvallur and Madurai districts.

AIADMK has announced that street protests will be held across Tamil Nadu for ten days starting from the 10th to condemn the property tax hike.

Tamil Nadu BJP leader Annamalai has announced that he will take part in the 8th protest against the property tax hike in corporations across Tamil Nadu.

Nehru: The central government is to blame

Chennai: Minister KN Nehru has said that the DMK government does not want to raise property tax in Tamil Nadu and that the tax has been increased on the recommendation of the 15th Finance Commission on the condition that the central government will provide funds only if the tax is increased.

“We need to raise the property tax of local bodies. That is why it was stated in the recommendation of the 15th Finance Commission set up by the Central Government that the Central Government grants would be released.

It has been 24 years since the tax hike in Chennai Corporation. It has since been elevated to the present. In other areas property taxes are now being raised after 14 years. The decision was taken after considering the market value, inflation and GDP value, ”said Minister K.N. Nehru added.
