Increasingly insistent rumors suggest that Red Dead Redemption 2 could soon return with an optimized version for PS5, Xbox Series, and even the Switch 2. Whether ambitious or a simple technical port, Rockstar appears ready to offer a second life to its Western masterpiece.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Heading to PS5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2?

Since its 2018 launch on PS4 and Xbox One, and its 2019 arrival on PC, Red Dead Redemption 2 has never received an official update to leverage the power of new-generation consoles. Now, multiple sources point to a potential revival of Rockstar’s open-world gem: a next-gen patch for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and a possible release on the Nintendo Switch 2.

These projects could launch before the end of March 2026, boasting significant technical enhancements like 60 FPS, native 4K resolution, ray tracing, and optimized loading times. These whispers gained traction after actor Rob Wiethoff, the voice of John Marston, hinted at a “very exciting announcement” in the works from Rockstar.

Further fueling speculation, Rockstar briefly displayed an “online migration” option on its support site for modernized versions of Red Dead Online. This detail, since removed, has only intensified the buzz. Actor Roger Clark, who voices Arthur Morgan, also recently suggested that remasters or remakes are not out of the question, noting the industry’s trend toward refreshing classics like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption.

Rockstar’s Strategic Moves

The potential arrival of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Switch 2 would mark a significant first for a major AAA title on Nintendo’s new console. This move represents a strategic opportunity to broaden the game’s player base.

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, has confirmed its support for the Switch 2, announcing the inclusion of several major third-party titles to bolster its launch. Red Dead Redemption 2, with its expansive open world, immersive narrative, and visual fidelity, could thrive on the new console, potentially enhanced by DLSS technology.

For PS5 and Xbox Series players, a next-gen patch would address the long-standing disappointment over the lack of optimized performance. While a Rockstar insider suggested in 2022 that remaster plans were shelved in favor of GTA VI, recent clues, including the brief online support mention and consistent leaks, point to a strategic shift.

The combined potential of a Switch 2 version and enhanced current-gen performance could re-establish Arthur Morgan and the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 in the spotlight.
