Brazilian Congressman Sought for Arrest Amid Coup Attempt Examination
The political crisis in Brazil deepens as authorities seek the immediate arrest of Federal deputy Alexandre ramagem, a former intelligence chief, over concerns he has fled the country while facing a 16-year prison sentence for his alleged role in a failed attempt to overthrow the government.
On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, the Socialism and Liberty Party (Psol) formally requested the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and the Federal Police (PF) issue an arrest warrant for Ramagem (PL-RJ), citing a significant risk of flight. This request follows reports indicating the congressman may be residing in Miami, Florida.
According to a letter sent to PF General Director Andrei Rodrigues,”According to widely reported by the press,Federal Deputy Alexandre Ramagem would be residing in the United States,in a luxury condominium in the city of North Miami,which possibly constitutes a risk of escape or impediment to the execution of a sentence.”
The move comes after Ramagem was convicted by the court and sentenced to 16 years, 1 month, and 15 days in prison for his involvement in the attempted coup d’état. During the initial investigation, STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes prohibited ramagem from leaving Brazil and ordered him to surrender his passports. There has been no public confirmation that these documents have been returned to authorities.
“His international whereabouts and the accusations against him,if confirmed,constitute a concrete risk to the submission of criminal law,” Psol stated in its official request.
The allegations center around reports published by the news portal PlatôBR, which claim Ramagem is currently staying in a luxury condominium in North Miami. While currently on leave from his duties in the Chamber of Deputies – a leave scheduled to conclude on December 12th – his official status remains “in office,” and his diplomatic passport is listed as “valid.”
News outlet O Poder360 attempted to contact Ramagem’s representatives for comment on his location and leave status, but the team declined to respond. The publication indicated it will update its reporting should a statement be provided.
