Guilin, China, January 5, 2026 – For people living with psoriasis, there’s now a new tool too assess a hidden risk: hyperglycemia. Researchers have developed and validated a machine learning model that can predict the likelihood of developing high blood sugar in individuals with the inflammatory skin condition.
Psoriasis and Blood Sugar: A Surprising Connection
A new model uses machine learning to identify psoriasis patients at high risk of hyperglycemia, paving the way for more personalized treatment plans.
- Psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory disease, is linked to impaired glucose metabolism.
- The XGBoost model achieved high accuracy in predicting hyperglycemia risk across multiple datasets.
- A web-based calculator is available to help clinicians assess individual patient risk.
- The study highlights the importance of monitoring blood sugar levels in psoriasis patients.
Can psoriasis actually raise your risk of high blood sugar? Yes. Psoriasis is more than just a skin condition; it’s a systemic illness with links to inflammation that can disrupt how your body processes glucose, perhaps leading to insulin resistance and hyperglycemia.
The study, published in Clinical, Cosmetic, and Investigational Dermatology, addressed a critical gap in care. “As of right now, there is no prediction model for psoriasis patients’ risk of hyperglycemia,” the researchers wrote. “Thus, to screen out the high-risk group and implement early intervention, and also to provide guidance for the individualized treatment of psoriasis patients, we propose to build a prediction model for the risk of hyperglycemia in psoriasis patients using clinical data of psoriasis patients and machine learning algorithms.”
how the Model Works
Researchers collected data from 575 psoriasis patients treated at the Affiliated Hospital of Guilin Medical University in China. The data was split into a training set (70%) and an internal test set (30%). To
