The publication festival of fiction writer Ahmad Bashir’s book ‘Bangladesh Films: Deshkal O Shilparup : 1947-2017’ was held at the Alliance Française Auditorium in Dhanmondi of the capital on Friday (April 26) afternoon. Alliance Française and Du Prakshan jointly organized the event.

Film journalist and critic Anupam Hayat, poet, researcher and editor Dr. Kajal Rashid Shaheen, film researcher and photographer Mir Shamchul Alam Babu and poet and film teacher Sakira Parveen.

At the beginning of the program, the director of Allianz Française de Dhaka, Francois Grojon, gave a welcome speech. Kaniz Fatima, Managing Editor of Du Prakash, delivered the welcome speech.

Anupam Hayat said on the occasion that the author is a fiction writer. He strongly inscribes his attitude in the book. It is everywhere in the book. That’s what set him apart.

Dr. Kajal Rashid Shaheen said that the main focus of the book is on national films. The author has included a chapter on that in his book to convey the importance of the matter. We can know and understand ourselves better through national films. By knowing our own strengths and weaknesses, we can ignore and deal with external aggression.

Mir Shamchul Alam Babu said that Rupban has changed the course of Bangladeshi films. That is a big event. The best part of the book is that all the films mentioned in the book have been seen and observed in depth by the author. It is well understood after reading the book.

Sakira Parveen says that in the book she has followed her own method-observation rather than applying the traditional method of film evaluation. So the author’s opinion may not agree with everyone. But reading the book is essential.

Kaniz Fatima said, it is not an irrefutable history book. It is an objective account of the uneven journey of Bangladeshi films. That statement is from a film-loving fiction writer. Through this book, we see anti-propaganda fiction writer Ahmad Bashir in a different form, in a different mood. His perspective is not that of a critic, but that of a layman. Those who spend pocket money and watch movies have brought Bangladeshi movies to the present level. We are delighted to publish his book.

After the speech of the invited panelists, while expressing the feelings of the author of the book under discussion, Ahmed Bashi, he reminisced about his childhood movie viewing. At the same time, he describes the context of writing the book.

After that, writer Ahmad Bashir answered various questions asked by the audience in the open question session. Poet and journalist Imran Mahfuz, film journalist and writer Momin Rahman and others participated in the question and answer session.

In the event, the world famous novel ‘Ashi Dini Prithibhaya’ by French novelist Jules Verne, translated by writer Ahmad Bashir, was launched. The newly published book is also published by Du Prakashan. It is known that the book was published by Bangla Academy in 1987.

Ahmed Bashir is a contemporary novelist and short story writer of Bangladesh. So far he has written five novels, several short story collections and children’s books. Depicting the life-pains, anxieties, emotions and sufferings of the middle-class and marginalized people of the country are distinctive features of his fiction. In his recently published book “Bangladesh Films : Deshkal O Shilparup : 1947-2017” he has tried to analyze the influence of films in shaping the cultural development of Bangladesh. Here he attempts an intellectual exploration of the chronological development of the country’s films, the social context the medium has assumed over the past few decades, and the contribution it has made to overall national cohesion and values.
