The Polish film studio AIO announced the world premiere of a new biographical film about Russian President Vladimir Putin in September. The head of the Kremlin will be played by a man created by artificial intelligence. Based on the obtained testimonies, the film wants to bring the viewer closer to what the Russian ruler really is and what goes on in his head.

“Inviting Putin to the studio for 20,000 shots was out of the question, and the archival materials available online did not allow us to create a high-resolution deep fake model suitable for film use. So we created a pioneering artificial intelligence-driven technology that allowed us to create a film character without having to rely on a real human model,” describe the creators.

The development of the artificial Putin took about two years. The Polish studio characterized the film as a “close and personal story of the Kremlin leader”, which has no analogues in cinematography.

For example, his love affair with gymnast Alina Kabaeva, with whom he is expected to have four children, will not be absent from Putin’s privacy. Or the details of the botched anti-terrorist operation at Moscow’s Dubrovka theater in 2002. At least 130 hostages died when special forces gassed them.

It’s no secret that few things infuriate Vladimir Putin more than discussing his private life. Information about lovers, children and the flow of money into the wallets of his loved ones is a complete taboo in Russia.

“When I arrived in Russia, I asked my foreign colleagues what I should watch out for. They all mentioned two topics that are not discussed: Vladimir Putin’s personal life and Chechnya, where the Kremlin was at war until 2009,” he told Aktuálné. Czech journalist and former correspondent of Hospodářské noviny in Russia Ondřej Soukup.

The film by the Polish director known as Patryk Vega wants to show the viewer what the Russian ruler really is, what goes on in his head and why he still longs for imperialist Russia, based on the obtained testimonies. The film also includes footage shot by Ukrainian filmmakers during the Russian invasion, the very first shot showing Putin in a delicate situation on the hospital floor.

Director Vega originally named the film Raft in law (influential and wealthy head of organized crime – editor’s note). Cinemas will release it this September in 35 countries around the world. “Putin is not just a film. It is a response to the worldwide effort to understand the motives and actions of one of the most controversial figures in contemporary politics,” concludes the director.
