Doha – Follow-up: Two informed sources confirmed that the Doha government is seeking to obtain a multi-billion dollar loan to purchase European “Typhoon” fighters. A Qatari official said in a press statement: “The new Typhoon aircraft will develop Qatar’s strategic efforts to achieve stability. The propulsion method and mechanisms have not yet been determined.” One of the sources said that the financing, which will be supported by credit agencies, amounts to about four billion dollars. Qatar concluded a contract worth five billion pounds ($6.62 billion) with the British defense company BAE Systems to purchase 24 Typhoon fighters. This company, BAE Systems, is a joint venture between BAE, the French company Airbus, and the Italian Leonardo company, and supports an estimated 40,000 jobs in Britain. BAE, which is the largest defense equipment company in Europe, announced at the time that the contract was subject to “company-specific financing and receipt conditions related to the first installment of the price scheduled to be paid no later than mid-2018.”
