Samuel Emilus: from Championship Glory to CFL’s Highest-Paid Receiver

The Saskatchewan Roughriders star receiver, still savoring the scent of champagne on his Gray Cup jersey, has secured a historic contract, cementing his place as a rising force in Canadian football.

Samuel Emilus can still vividly recall the euphoria of victory. The scent of champagne, he says, remains embedded in the jersey he wore during the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ 25-17 triumph over the Montreal Alouettes in the Gray Cup on November 16th in Winnipeg. While the championship rings themselves won’t be distributed until the start of the next training camp, the memory is fresh. “I won’t hide it from you, I still watch it frequently enough! It is indeed a historic event. We made history.”

The seventh overall pick in the 2022 CFL draft, Emilus has quickly become a pivotal player for Saskatchewan. He entered the league producing at a remarkable pace, and the Roughriders relied heavily on his contributions to secure the championship. “I felt really confident,” Emilus stated. “I had never been so focused for a match.”

despite his breakout performance,Emilus acknowledges that his profile remains relatively low in Eastern Canada, due to playing in the West division and limited exposure against teams like the Alouettes until recently. However, that changed on the biggest stage. At the post-Gray Cup press conference, wearing his championship apparel, Emilus expressed the added satisfaction of defeating his childhood team. The applause from his family in the room underscored a sense of long-awaited recognition. “Maybe in Quebec, people don’t know what kind of guy I am,” he admitted. “The league knows what kind of player I am. I just had to play on the biggest stage possible to show it.”

A Historic Contract

On Christmas Eve, Emilus received a gift that further validated his ascent: a new two-year contract with the Roughriders. The agreement officially makes him the highest-paid canadian receiver in CFL history, with a base salary of $285,000 in 2026 and $290,000 in 2027.While specific player salaries are not typically public knowledge, sources confirm Emilus is also among the league’s top three highest-paid receivers overall.

Emilus views this reward as a testament to years of dedication. “This shows all the work and determination as secondary school,” he explained. He recalled a time when pursuing a professional football career felt unattainable. “When I played with wolves, earning a living through football was never an option.”

Despite the financial milestone, Emilus emphasized that his primary motivation wasn’t the paycheck. He prioritized remaining with the Roughriders. “There’s no better place to play in the league,” he affirmed, repeating the sentiment three times during the interview. “With my agent, we evaluated the market by considering my statistics, the type of player I am and the national passport. And that gave rise to this contract. The goal was not to become the highest paid player.”

“We all know that our career is short, so we want to earn as much as possible,” Emilus added. “So it was easy to sign.”

A Future Hall of Famer?

Emilus remains grounded despite his success, acknowledging that broader recognition may still be forthcoming. However, he finds validation in the belief of those closest to him. Even his quarterback, Trevor Harris, boldly predicted during the week leading up to the Gray Cup that Emilus is “a future member of the Hall of Fame.”

The prediction elicited a laugh from Emilus two months later, not from disbelief, but from a quiet sense of shared understanding.”I have no choice but to respect his opinion!” he said. “Its just that in his eyes, I don’t have the recognition that I should have in the league. He knows what kind of player I am.He sees that I can be a future member of the Temple and I see it too. I just have to prove it.” For Emilus, the support of his family, teammates, and those who truly understand his potential is enough.
