Lund University will bestow its newly established honorary member award upon Denmark’s former regent, Queen Margrethe, during a ceremony in January 2026. The recognition celebrates her profound commitment to science, art, and the enduring historical connection between Sweden and Denmark.
The honorary member award, instituted in 2024, acknowledges individuals who have made exceptional contributions to both the university and society. Sweden’s former Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson was the inaugural recipient.
According to Rector Erik Renström, Queen Margrethe embodies the values Lund University aspires to uphold. “HM Queen Margrethe represents artistic expression in close association with a deep commitment to our history and highly motivated sensitivity to the needs of the present,” he stated. “It harmonizes well with the kind of university Lund University is and wants to be.”
the decision to honor the Queen stems from her multifaceted engagement with academia and the arts. She possesses a strong academic background, having studied archeology at Cambridge University and participating in archaeological digs with her grandfather, the Swedish King Gustav VI Adolf. Beyond her royal duties, Queen Margrethe is a celebrated artist, showcasing her work in exhibitions and serving as an inspiration to students across all disciplines.
Deep Roots in the Region
The historical ties between Denmark and Sweden are central to the university’s rationale. Lund and Uppåkra were once part of Denmark, and Lund hosted the first higher education institution in the Nordic region as early as 1425. When Lund University was founded in 1666,a key objective was to solidify connections with the newly acquired Swedish province – a legacy that continues to shape the region’s identity.
“queen Margrethe personifies to a great extent through close family ties and a common cultural history,” Renström explained. This connection is especially poignant given the current geopolitical climate. “We are once again living in a time when consensus and cooperation between like-minded countries such as Denmark and Sweden play a major role in our countries’ future destinies.”
A Familiar Face to Lund Students
Queen margrethe’s connection to Lund university extends beyond formal recognition. She has long been a popular figure among students, notably after a memorable “Student Evening” in 2005. During the event, she discussed her artistic endeavors with both humor and insight – a combination that encapsulates the spirit of Lunda, as the university’s unique culture is known.
Moreover, the Queen’s acknowledgment of Lund’s role as a safe haven for Danish student unions during World War II resonated deeply with the student body. “Another weighty factor has been the impression HM queen Margrethe made on student life after participating in student Afton and by shining a light on how the Danish student unions during the Second World War got a safe haven in Lund,” Renström noted.
Queen Margrethe retained her title of queen following her abdication in 2024. Further information is available on the Royal Palace’s website.
