After the sudden death of Julieta Colombo, niece and executor of Quino’s artistic legacy, the management of the cartoonist’s heritage is up in the air

Colombo’s death was announced on the site Official Mafalda: “It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to Julieta Colombo, who since childhood was witness of the work routine and the work from his uncle, Quino. Since 2020, in addition, Julieta has been the legal representative of Quino’s work and responsible for keeping her cultural legacy alive throughout the world.
After Quino’s death in 2020, Colombo became the main reference point for his uncle’s work, with whom he had worked for more than 30 years. A year ago he had signed an agreement with the government of the province of Mendoza, where Quino was originally from, to digitize the complete work of the cartoonist. He will be baptized as Quino Cultural Space and will become a major tourist attraction in a province known for its wines and ski slopes.
“It is a very great sadness, not only because we were very close friends but because we loved her very much in the family,” added Diego Lavado. “It has all been very sudden; we saw each other in Spain for a couple of days, in October of last year, and on our return we found out that his health was complicating due to a previous history. It has been a bucket of cold water, because we were about to see each other in Buenos Aires at any time and we didn’t meet on my last trip”.
Colombo began in 1983 as an assistant to Alicia Colombo, the cartoonist’s wife, and was in charge of prepare the material for the Mafalda strips published in newspapers around the world. Then in 2003, when Quino and his wife went to live in Spain, they offered her to be his agent in Latin America.
