Quito Earns National Accolades for Airport Security, Child Welfare, and Teen Pregnancy Reduction
Ecuador’s capital city, Quito, has been recognized with three prestigious national awards for groundbreaking initiatives focused on enhancing public safety, supporting vulnerable children, and dramatically improving adolescent health outcomes. The honors were presented at the Ecuador 2025 Exemplary Practices Contest hosted by the Leaders to Govern Corporation, highlighting Quito’s commitment to innovative governance and social progress.
A Model for Transparent Governance and Security
The Mariscal Sucre Airport Technological Control Center received an award in the category of transparent governance and comprehensive management. This recognition stems from the center’s implementation of a real-time monitoring model, which significantly improves both security and operational coordination at the airport. The system allows for proactive identification and mitigation of potential risks, ensuring a safer and more efficient travel experience.
Investing in Early Childhood Development
Quito’s dedication to its youngest citizens was also lauded, with a specific recognition for the work of the Patronato San José Unit and its Quito Wawas programs. These initiatives directly address child malnutrition and promote early development through comprehensive support services provided to families. The programs represent a significant investment in the future of Quito’s children, ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive.
Historic Reduction in Teenage Pregnancies
Perhaps the most impactful achievement recognized was an unprecedented 50% reduction in teenage pregnancies within municipal institutions. This success is attributed to the Healthy Schools strategy, a holistic approach that not only focuses on reproductive health education but also integrates crucial mental health support for adolescents. This demonstrates a commitment to preventative care and empowering young people to make informed decisions about their futures.
Mayor Pabel Muñoz accepted the awards on behalf of the city’s dedicated public servants. “The number one priority in Quito is our children. That is why this recognition is so important,” he stated. He further emphasized the success of the educational strategy, noting, “Reducing teenage pregnancies by half shows that prevention works. And at the airport, technology and innovation are at the service of security.”
The Ecuador 2025 Exemplary Practices Contest evaluated a total of 330 projects submitted by 59 municipalities, 16 prefectures, 13 ministries, and 105 institutions nationwide, making Quito’s triple win particularly noteworthy. Additionally, Quito has been acknowledged for its cultural vibrancy with its inclusion in the Creative Cities Network. These accolades underscore Quito’s emergence as a leader in innovative and impactful public service, setting a positive example for cities across Ecuador and beyond.
