Decades after it was painted: a painting by the late R. Zalman Kleinman, in which Hasidic followers are seen dancing a Hasidic dance, was sold to an “international customer” for $140,000

A painting by the late painter R. Zalman Kleinman, a Chabad Hasid who lived in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, in which a group of Hasids dancing a Hasidic dance is shown, was recently sold privately for $140,000.

According to a report on the Chabad-COL website, the person who accompanied the sale was the art dealer Israel Klapman, a Chabad Hasid, with the help of the Bezalel Art Gallery.

According to him, the customer is an “international customer”.

Kleinman painted many paintings in which he expressed the life of Hassidim. His paintings are now known in every Hasidic home – with many of his works appearing on book covers. One of his most famous paintings is the painting known as ‘From Chaslavitch to Lubavitch’, which depicts Chassidim traveling to the rabbi’s court and the horse leading them hovering in the air.

In 2015, this painting was sold for $480,000.

“Zalman Kleinman was one of the greatest artists in Chabad ever,” says Kapelman, “most children today imagine the life of Hassidim in the old days based on Kleinman’s paintings.”
