Racist gestures in the stands before OM-OL: the League postpones its decision until December 6

A little less than a month after the incidents during the pre-match – which never took place – between OM and Lyon on October 29 at the Vélodrome, the LFP disciplinary committee met this Wednesday to rule on the behavior of Lyon supporters in the visitor park. In images, we could see OL ultras performing Nazi salutes and miming monkey gestures, in front of their Marseille counterparts. Openly racist gestures already seen during previous OL meetings in recent months. The club has since tried to identify the people involved, but most of them were hooded.

Lyon could expect sanctions which could range from a closure of the Lyon park for several matches or even a partial or total closed session of the Lyon enclosure. Despite a twenty-day investigation, the disciplinary committee decided to postpone its decision and will only give its verdict at its meeting on December 6, in two weeks. The file is indeed complicated and the LFP still hopes to obtain individual identifications of the authors.

The sanction should fall on the evening when the match must be replayed

“Given the seriousness of the facts, the LFP Disciplinary Committee decided to put the case under investigation. After reading the investigation report, the Commission decides to put the file under advisement pending additional information. It will make its final decision at the end of the meeting on Wednesday December 6, 2023,” indicates the LFP press release.

Ironically, the decision should therefore fall on the evening when this match between OM and OL, canceled following the attack on the Lyon bus and the injuries to Lyon coach Fabio Grosso and his assistant Raffaele Longo, must a priori take place. But the leaders of Lyon appealed the decision to replay this match at the Vélodrome, with the public but without their supporters banned from traveling. Here too, the answer is slow to come in this matter.
