The Chief Whip of Jatiya Sangsad and General Secretary of Jatiya Party Mujibul Haque Chunnu has commented that increasing the price of electricity and gas is intolerable during the month of Ramadan. He demanded to withdraw the decision without increasing the price at the moment.
Mujibul Haque Chunnu made this demand while standing on the point of order in the session of the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday (February 27). Meanwhile, the Deputy Speaker presided over the session.
Chunnu said, “Today I saw that the government has increased the price of electricity by 40 to 70 paisa per unit and also increased the price of gas.” The reason is said to be devaluation of the dollar and reduction of subsidies.
He said, we do not know how much per unit of electricity the government spends to produce or buy. But it has always been said that thousands of rupees of subsidy is being given, that subsidy should be reduced. And a subsidy of about Rs 43,000 crore over the next three years will reduce that. Reduce, but how to reduce. People who are unable to go to the crushed market, unemployment is increasing, the rise in electricity prices means that the prices of many goods will rise with it. Because with electricity, we produce many products, the prices of those products will increase.
Chunnu said that he has increased the price of gas. Many garment factories in Narayanganj and Gazipur are gas dependent. But they are not able to provide gas to all those factories all the time. Some days you give gas there, some days you can’t. Even the traders are losing, the production is decreasing, the gas price is being increased again.
The people elected the government just a month ago with high expectations, and if that government increases the price of electricity and gas before fasting, it is intolerable. I would humbly request the government on behalf of our party to at least not increase the price of gas and electricity at this time.
He said, he used to think that the government should come to a stable state, the people of the country should come to a stable state, the economy should come to a normal state, but now he dropped the thought. I request the government to withdraw this price increase.
