Colombo:

Opposition parties and the general public have been campaigning for Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to step down as president, acknowledging the serious economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

Opposition parties have filed two no-confidence motions against Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Mahinda Rajapaksa for refusing to resign. Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections.

The United Opposition, the main opposition party, is actively campaigning for the resolution to succeed. 2 no-confidence motions have been filed on behalf of that party.

The first resolution is against President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa under Article 42 of the Constitution. Resolution 2 is against the government of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Sri Lankan Parliament convened today amidst this tense situation. It examined the no-confidence motions of the Opposition. Today’s meeting will decide on when to discuss the resolution. According to the Sri Lankan constitution, they have a week to vote on the notice after giving notice to the chairman. So today’s meeting will know when the voting will take place.

2 It is said that only one of the resolutions of no confidence will be made by the Government. It is said that the no-confidence motion against Gotabhaya Rajapaksa will be dismissed using special powers.

The no-confidence motion is likely to be put to a vote after the debate. The no-confidence motion will win only if 113 of the 225 MPs in the Sri Lankan parliament support it. But the opposition does not have that much strength.

Meanwhile, the Tamil National Alliance and the United National Party, led by former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, are also expected to pass no-confidence motions. Opposition parties are hopeful that Mahinda Rajapaksa will be ousted.

Gotabhaya Rajapaksa cannot be ousted from the presidency even if the no-confidence motions succeed. He was not forced to resign. He only has to come forward and leave on his own. Otherwise the law can be amended and dismissed.

At the same time, Mahinda Rajapaksa can resign by resolution. Some of the ruling party MPs are against Mahinda Rajapaksa. So the resolution without confidence is said to have a chance to win.

The Prime Minister’s Office has stated that Mahinda Rajapaksa will not resign in this situation. In an interview with a Colombo newspaper, Mahinda Rajapaksa has officially announced that he will not resign.

Various rumors are circulating today about the new government and the new cabinet, saying he will not resign even if he attends the parliamentary session. However, he said the matter had not yet been discussed with the president.

Meanwhile, new restrictions have been imposed on politicians in Sri Lanka from today. It has been announced that he will not participate in televised and radio debates.
