European archaeologists found this week a 3,000-year-old bronze sword during excavations in the city of Nördlingenin southern Germany, an announcement that was made official this Friday by the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments.

It is an octagonal weapon, with an octagonal grip made entirely of bronze. According to a preliminary classification, it dates from the end of the 14th century BC, and therefore from the Middle Bronze Age. “Sword finds from this period are already rare on their own.”the entity said in a statement.

The discovered bladed weapon comes from a tomb with abundant bronze objects. inside the pit, a man, a woman and a young man were buried. Archaeologists aren’t sure if all three were related, and the strangeness of these finds also raises questions about the origin of the sword.

German archaeologists found a weapon with an octagonal grip, made entirely of bronze and dating from the late 14th century.

Researchers know of only two areas where octagonal swords are made in Germany: One of them, local, was in the south of the country, while the other came from the north of Germany and Denmark. However, they need to carry out further studies to determine where it was cast.

Along with this, and to add more complexity to the investigation, a comparison of casting techniques and decoration showed that some of the northern octagonal swords are apparently replicas of the southern German forms, while other pieces could be genuine imports.

“The sword and burial still need to be examined so that our archaeologists can classify this find more accurately.”clarified Mathias Pfeil, head of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection. “But you can already say that his condition is exceptional. Such a find is very rare.” Indian.

The value of the sword discovered in Germany lies in its hilt, very elaborate and perfectly preserved. DPA

As stated National Geographic, the value of the recently found sword lies in its handle, very elaborate and perfectly preserved. was manufactured casting the hilt directly onto the blade -technique known as overcasting- and then making the decoration using punches.
