The Minister of Interior, Imad Trabelsi, directed instructions to the Director of the General Administration of Ports Security, ordering the closure of the land and border crossing with Tunisia, Ras Jdir, immediately, until further notice.

This decision comes in the wake of clashes that took place at the Ras Jedir crossing, immediately after the arrival of forces from the Law Rescue Administration to the crossing, as the security forces that had previously secured the crossing refused their presence.

Trabelsi instructed the Law Enforcement Department to go to Ras Ijdir yesterday, Monday, to support the Security Directorate and security agencies in combating smuggling and security violations.

The Media Office of the Ministry of Interior denounced the clashes, pointing the finger at what it described as “outlaw groups” after they opened the day on members of the Law Enforcement Department.

The Ministry of Interior said that the purpose of these groups is to create chaos and disrupt work after preventing violations at the crossing, noting that “weak souls” engage in illegal work to achieve gains.

The Ministry of Interior stressed that it will not allow chaos at the border crossing, stressing that it will be under the authority and legitimacy of the state.

She pointed out that the work carried out by “these outlaw groups” will not be tolerated, adding that she will take legal measures to impose the harshest penalties on those involved.

The Ministry of Interior continued that the Ras Jedir port has no right to be subject to specific groups, cities or regions, indicating that the Law Enforcement Department was tasked with preventing smuggling, combating crime, and ensuring the smooth flow of work, to alleviate the suffering of travelers.

Reuters quoted Tunisian official media late last night, Monday, that Tunisia temporarily closed the Ras Jedir border crossing with Libya for security reasons after armed clashes broke out on the Libyan side.
