Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival Reimagines Ravel’s Masterpieces
A unique concert series at Brandon University will offer fresh perspectives on the works of Maurice Ravel, promising a captivating experience for classical music enthusiasts. The festival continues its tribute to the composer with arrangements designed to highlight the brilliance and enduring appeal of his iconic pieces.
The next performance in the series is scheduled for Sunday, February 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lorne Watson Recital hall, located within Brandon University’s Queen Elizabeth II music Building.
Audiences will be treated to rarely-heard arrangements that breathe new life into Ravel’s compositions. among the highlights is a rendition of “Shéhérazade,” arranged for voice, flute, and piano, featuring soprano Sharon rogers and flutist Nancy Hennen. This arrangement promises to deliver the work’s rich, exotic colors and compelling storytelling.
Perhaps the most anticipated reimagining is of Ravel’s universally recognized “Boléro.” The piece, famed for its hypnotic rhythmic drive, will be presented in a powerful and intimate arrangement for two pianos, offering a wholly new way to experience the masterpiece.
adding to the evening’s intrigue is a two-piano arrangement of “Concerto for the Left Hand in D Major.” Originally composed for pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost the use of his right arm during World War I, Ravel’s ingenious writing transforms the piece into a virtuosic and unforgettable experience playable entirely with the left hand.
The concert will showcase a stellar lineup of performers. Rogers, a gifted singer and pianist, is a Brandon University alumna making her festival debut. Hennen, an acclaimed flutist and educator, formerly served as principal of symphony Hamilton. Leading the musical direction are pianists Alexander tselyakov and daniel Tselyakov, both renowned for their artistry and innovative programming.
“This concert promises brilliance, creativity, and remarkable performances,” according to a festival release. “It highlights Ravel’s timeless music in fresh and unforgettable arrangements.”
